Her mission has been to tie physical activity to the K-12 learning environment while harnessing the expertise and energy of the most challenged students to lead and manage the programs The results were what brain researchers told us all along - physical activity prepares the brain to learn and generates cognitive success for learners. Teachers are busy and I knew if we were to really change the paradigm from "kids learn best when they are in desks and focused on a task."
Designing a synthesis of education and fitness that dramatically impacts youth fitness and academic success, began with the popular, innovative program: Generation FIT ®. Brain research and technology caught up with that mission over the past three years. Shasek developed the patented FootPOWR peripheral (with brilliant Kevin Colburn of 3D Innovations) in order to provide “exergame” benefits to thousands of existing computer games, casual games, virtual worlds and educational software. The resulting computer peripheral ties physical activity to computer use at home and in schools. I am a teacher of a very small school in rural Idaho, USA. Because our location is somewhat isolated, I use technology and collaborative projects to bring the world to my students. Through ePals, I have found a partner classroom in rural New Zealand. For both of us, our students come from farming families, so an environmental focus is natural. We developed and created together a "virtual field trip, with a focus on biodiversity and our culture. My students helped decide what to include in the video. We talked about native plants, animals, ecosystems, and how all of these impact our daily lives. We also focused on ways to "be green," including our school's success with solar panels. We approached the video as "a day in the life" kind of idea, with concepts of biodiversity worked in. That kept my students' interest high. We are sharing the video with our collaborative partner in New Zealand, but also with all members of the ePals site. My students are beginning to understand how they fit into the larger world. They are very proud of their work. Through techonology, I am able to take them places and show them things they might not ever experience in their lives. The results are that they notice similarities to, not just differences from, their peers living on another continent."){kind=small}
